Julian Kirkness - J Street Technology - Custom Web Application - 98004
Julian Kirkness

Julian has been an Access user since version 1 and has spent many years developing and marketing Human Resources and CRM applications built in Access and Access Web Apps.

His first business started in 1996 with an HR application built entirely in Access 95. This business grew considerably over the years as did the product moving to a SQL Server back end and ultimately to a fully Web based solution. Selling the business in 2010, Julian had a period of inactivity (due to non-compete clauses) and about 3 years ago started looking for technology to build new applications and a new business.

He decided to use Access again in the form of Access Web Apps (AWAs) this time – because of the uniquely rapid development process, combined with the robustness of SQL Azure and Sharepoint. The ability to market the apps through the Sharepoint App Store was also critical.

He quickly became the first person to publish apps built with the technology on the App Store and so far has 5 apps available. For further information see

In 2014 he set up the Access Web Apps LinkedIn Group and is a regular contributor to this and other Access groups and forums on the subject of Web Apps. He is keen on photography, boating in its various forms and golf when time allows. He lives and works from a farmhouse surrounded by Orchards in rural Kent, UK.

Kevin Bell- J Street Technology - Custom Web Application - 98004
Kevin Bell

Kevin Bell is a test engineer on the Microsoft Access team in Redmond Washington.  Prior to joining Microsoft in 2008, Kevin was a partner in a consulting practice in Colorado that specialized in building software solutions for small businesses and departments in large corporations.  Their primary development environment was Microsoft Access connected to a SQL Server backend.  Over a 15+ year consulting career he has created a variety of custom applications from a management system for a small drapery shop with a hand full of users to a compliance tracking system for a large insurance company with hundreds of users in multiple locations.

Like many Access Developers, Kevin’s career with Access started by accident.  While working in Melbourne Australia for an illumination engineering firm, he started modernizing the company’s testing reports using Microsoft Excel.  Excel offered a rich presentation layer, but it wasn’t very efficient at managing large amounts of data. Databases at the time lacked graphical capabilities and Microsoft’s newly released Visual Basic lacked database support.  Then Access 1.0 arrived, combining the best elements of all three, and Kevin was hooked.

Over the years Kevin has been a member, officer and frequent presenter at the Denver Area Access User Group and now regularly attends both the Seattle Access User Group and the Pacific Northwest Access Developers Group.  Kevin is thrilled to be speaking at the 2011 Portland Database Designers Conference.
